Manage datacenters and clusters
Learn how to manage datacenters and clusters in Snow License Manager.
Add datacenters and clusters
-
On the Computers menu, select Datacenters and clusters.
-
On the context menu, select Add datacenter/cluster.
-
On the General tab, do the following:
-
Enter a Name for the datacenter/cluster.
-
Select the Organization node that the datacenter/cluster belongs to.
-
For datacenters that are managed by a controller, select the Controller.
-
To add a controller, do one of the following:
-
In Select a controller, select the computer from the list.
-
In Search controller, filter the list of available computers by typing a search criterion. Select the computer from the list that appears.
-
-
To remove a controller, select the Select a controller list, and then select Clear.
-
-
Enter a Description for the datacenter/cluster.
-
Select the Hypervisor technology that is used.
- When you select VMware vSphere as hypervisor, an additional option appears at the bottom of this screen.
If the VMware DRS feature is enabled for this cluster, select Datacenter is a VMware DRS cluster.
- When you select VMware vSphere as hypervisor, an additional option appears at the bottom of this screen.
-
When high availability is used for the datacenter/cluster, select High availability enabled. If you are unsure, check with the administrator of the cluster.
-
Select Save.
-
-
On the Hosts tab, add the computers to be included in the datacenter/cluster:
-
Select Add hosts.
-
Do one of the following:
-
Use the checkboxes on the left-hand side of the screen to select the computer or computers.
-
Filter the list of available computers by typing a search criterion. Select the computer or computers from the list that appears.
-
-
Select Save.
The selected computers are added to the Hosts list. -
To delete a computer on the Hosts list, select Delete on the row of the computer, and then select OK to confirm.
-
-
On the Extended coverage tab, add any extended coverage:
-
Select Extend coverage.
-
In the Select application step, do one of the following:
-
In Select application, select the application from the list.
-
In Search for application, filter the list of available applications by typing a search criterion. Select the application from the list that appears.
-
-
In the Select application step, select the Coverage reason.
-
In the Select datacenter/cluster step, select the computer to extend the coverage to.
-
Select Extend coverage.
The selected computer is added to the Extended coverage list. -
To remove extended coverage from a computer on the Extended coverage list, select Delete on the row of the computer, and then select OK to confirm.

EXAMPLE
In the following example, most of the settings on the General tab are derived automatically:
-
The Snow Integration Connector for VMware vSphere is activated in the Snow License Manager environment.
-
A datacenter/cluster is using VMware vSphere as its hypervisor technology.
In this case, the configuration of this particular VMware vSphere datacenter/cluster will be passed to Snow License Manager, which means that you will see the following on the General tab of the Edit datacenter/cluster page:
-
All of the fields will be grayed out, with the exception of Organization, Controller (host), and Description, which will still be editable.
-
The Hypervisor technology will be VMware vSphere, and the following will be set automatically — selected or not — depending on this datacenter/cluster's particular VMware vSphere configuration:
-
High availability enabled
-
Datacenter is a VMware DRS cluster
-
By design, these grayed-out settings cannot be manually changed, as having them in place is instrumental in licensing Windows Server environments correctly. These settings ensure that licensing requirements are covered for hosts with virtual machines running in datacenters/clusters that use VMware vSphere hypervisor technology.
In other words, implementing the VMware vSphere connector provides an automated way to reach improved license compliance calculations; in addition, these settings are also used in the Windows Server Assessment report.
Edit datacenters and clusters
-
On the Computers menu, select Datacenters and clusters.
-
Select the datacenter/cluster that you want to edit.
-
In the details view of the datacenter/cluster, select Edit datacenter/cluster.
-
Edit the applicable information. For more information, see Add datacenters and clusters.
-
Select Save.
Delete datacenters and clusters
You can delete single or multiple datacenters/clusters at the same time.
-
A deleted datacenter/cluster cannot be restored.
-
When the datacenter/cluster is deleted, it is removed from the system, all associated details are deleted, and all licenses and license assignments are released.
-
On the Computers menu, select Datacenters and clusters.
-
Use the checkboxes to select the datacenters/clusters that you want to delete.
-
On the context menu, select Delete datacenters.
-
Select OK to confirm.
You can also delete a datacenter/cluster by selecting Delete in the edit view of the datacenter/cluster.
You can configure automatic removal of empty datacenters. This is done by using the basic setting AUTO_REMOVE_EMPTY_DCC in Snow Management and Configuration Center. With this setting selected, any datacenter without licenses and hosts is automatically removed from the system.
